Diagon Alley

Diagon Alley is the Harry Potter themed area within Universal Studios.  The whole area is truly amazing.  Universal have really pulled out all the stops to provide an awe inspiring experience.  I can honestly say that whenever I enter Diagon Alley or The Wizarding World of Harry Potter I feel like I have been transported into one of J.K Rowling’s magical stories, everything is so well themed from the shops, attractions and drinks carts, to the entertainment.

Diagon Alley is a firm favorite amongst guests who are able to purchase a magical wand at Ollivander’s Wand Shop, travel within the depths of Gringotts Bank or dine at the Leaky Cauldron.

The Leaky Cauldron

Diagon Alley

The Leaky Cauldron is the restaurant located in Diagon Alley.  The eatery has been designed to represent the grubby looking pub and inn from the Prisoner of Azkaban.    Offering traditional British faire such as Fish and Chips and Cottage Pie.  The decor consists of a cathedral ceiling with views towards the guest rooms.

Service

On entering, guests can take a glimpse at the food available which is set up as samples through a glass case.  Guests can then choose one of the counter service stations in which to place and pay for their order prior to being seated.  The order is then delivered to the table.  We guess that it is a good mixture between counter and table service dining.  The arrangement worked very well and was very efficient in terms of how quickly and easily we ordered, were seated and served.

Review

Ploughmans

The Ploughman’s lunch was a little disappointing as it didn’t have the pate as stated on the menu, however, everything else tasted pretty good.  It was quite heavily ladened with salad and there was no apple, which is typical for a British Plougman’s, however,  the Scotch egg was delicious and the bread was very fresh.

Bangers and Mash

The bangers were great, they were actually real British bangers (practically unheard of in Orlando), however, the mash wasn’t very impressive, it tasted a little bland and didn’t have the best consistency.  Overall it was ok, however, not what you would expect from a good British Pub or Inn.

Toad In The Hole

Toad in the Hole is typically a sausage in what us Brits call a Yorkshire Pudding.  Unfortunately the Yorkshire Pudding was a little on the soggy side and didn’t really resemble what those from Yorkshire call a Yorkshire Pudding.  If you have tasted a real Yorkshire Pudding, then you know what I mean!

They did provide typical British condiments!

Overall Conclusion

The food isn’t particularly bad but it isn’t anything to write home about either.  Our advice to anybody visiting from Britain would be that you find somewhere else to eat within Universal, I.O.A. or of course CityWalk, save the British food for when you return home.  If like us you live here and you really fancy some British food it is worth a visit, however, I think I will stick to cooking my own British favorites.

Overall quite disappointing.  I know British food gets a bad reputation but to be fair there are some great British Pubs and Inns that offer some really good food, we wish Universal had visited those locations and based their recipes on those establishments.  The food at Universal’s Leaky Cauldron almost resembled British school dinners!

Sorry Universal we love you and many of your restaurants, we just think you may have added to the myth of British food being pretty terrible.

On the up side the service was second to none, the waiter was extra friendly and helpful and we adored the decor!

Just improve the food a little Universal and you will be onto a winner!
