Whistling Mikey Art

Lovers of Disney art have descended upon Downtown Disney on 39 previous occasions to view some of the most diverse forms of stunning Disney artwork.
Unlike the regular Disney merchandize, Festival of The Masters focusses on the work of over 130 independent artisans that produce a broad range of affordable (and quite unaffordable) pieces of original artwork and jewelry.

Amazingly, with only a few months to go, Disney have decided to remove their dedicated page for the event from the internet.  If visitors now head to the Official Festival of The Master Disney Page, they are now diverted to the Disney Parks blog announcement for the cancellation.

The official reason for the late cancellation is that ongoing construction work that is currently transforming Downtown Disney into Disney Springs has restricted access to the area that is traditionally used for the event.
One source suggested to us, that the main reason for the cancellation of the event, was brought about by struggling parking system at DTD during the construction of the first multi level parking lot.

No reason is provided by the blog, why other areas of WDW haven’t been considered to home the event.
One of the most obvious choices for an alternative venue, would be Disney’s Boardwalk, which already hosts the Annual Swan and Dolphin Food & Wine Classic in the Fall.
We suspect however that the more family focussed Festival of the Masters event would over run the water’s edge sidewalks, posing a potential safety risk that Disney would never take.
In addition to this, the guests that have already booked into many accommodations beside the boardwalk might be justifiably disappointed that an event was moved outside their rooms.

Beyond that, Disney are really stuck for choice to find a venue for such a hugely popular event that ticks all of the necessary boxes;

  • Large enough
  • In a general area that does not require park admission
  • That’s far enough from resort accommodation areas.

Many art lovers will already have booked their accommodation for this event, and it will be interesting to see the responses from those that are disappointed for the late notice of this very unexpected cancellation.
