Downtown Disney balloon ride suspended indefinitely due to accident.
UPDATE: This ride is now back in operation!
Following a reported accident at a sister attraction in Hong Kong, the DTD Characters in Flight’s operators; Aerophile have taken steps to close all of their similar attractions indefinitely pending investigations.
Installed in the Spring of 2009, the Downtown Disney $18 a go, attraction has been popular with visitors, offers tremendous views of the Buena Vista area of Central Florida.
The precautionary measures follows an incident in which helium is thought to have escaped from the main section of the balloon resulting in an unplanned descent. The Hong Kong Newspaper; The Standard reported that at least 1 person on the ground and 4 of the passengers of the French based operation’s balloon are thought to have suffered injury.
The Downtown Disney balloon is thought to have been due for replacement during the Fall of 2012, and has been removed completely from its launch area. The Official Downtown Disney site has also removed the official entry for Characters in Flight from their pages.
Our Comment: We hope that Aerophile succeed in resolving the safety issue surrounding this much loved landmark on the Downtown Disney Skyline.
